WOODSIDE MONTESSORI ACADEMY

Community, Curiosity, and Creativity in Built Form

Project Overview

Woodside Montessori Academy’s new learning environment represents more than thoughtful interior design—it embodies the school’s founding mission to cultivate community, curiosity, and creativity in every student. Since its opening in 1985, the Academy has remained steadfast in its commitment to Dr. Maria Montessori’s ideals: a student-centered approach that honors the individual journey of each learner. This architectural project transforms that philosophy into tangible space, creating an environment where children develop independence, explore their natural curiosity, and collaborate meaningfully with peers and educators.

The design thoughtfully integrates Montessori principles into every spatial decision, recognizing that the environment serves as a teacher in itself. Through carefully curated materials, strategic sightlines, and age-appropriate spaces, the redesigned Academy provides students with the autonomy to direct their own learning while maintaining the structure and community connections essential to their growth.

Key Features

A New Learning Environment Designed for Student-Centered Growth

In Montessori education, the prepared environment is fundamental. Woodside's architectural redesign honors this principle by creating spaces that naturally invite exploration and independent decision-making. Open shelving systems display carefully organized learning materials at student height, encouraging children to select activities that align with their developmental interests and needs. This accessibility builds confidence and responsibility—core values of the Montessori method.

Design Philosophy: The Environment as Teacher

The layout fosters natural classroom communities while maintaining visual connections between learning spaces. Teachers can observe student engagement and provide guidance when appropriate, supporting the Montessori emphasis on unobtrusive observation and individualized learning pathways. Rather than imposing adult-designed instruction, the space empowers students to become active participants in their own education.

What our Client Say

Expert Coordination and Practical Solutions in Healthcare Project

I worked with Christine Monaghan on a healthcare-related project at the Boston Higashi School and found her to be extremely engaged, thoughtful, and easy to collaborate with.
She understands the importance of coordination and attention to detail in healthcare and institutional settings and was always open to technical input and practical solutions. From my perspective as an independent flooring consultant, her approach made a complex issue much easier to navigate. I would gladly work with Christine again and would recommend her to healthcare and institutional clients looking for a knowledgeable and responsive architect.

Transformed Our Space Beyond Expectations!

Christine was professional from the beginning on our project. Her emails and in person discussions were always met with great detail and proper expectations. We struggled with what to do with our space and what she was able to do with it was amazing! We look forward to seeing the final product and enjoy our new kitchen and living space when it's done. I cannot recommend Christine enough and share with everyone what she helped create!

A Seamless Process from Vision to Design

My wife and I had different goals and visions for the home and neither of us had undertaken a project of this scale. Throughout the design process, Christine listened carefully to each of us, shared new ideas and provided several different floor plans for us to consider - each incorporating of our varying objectives. Once we selected our favorite concept, Christine helped us to refine the layout and scope by presenting different design elements and pinpointing all the fine details. The 3D renderings she created were especially helpful for us to visualize and her flexibility working within our busy schedules was greatly appreciated. Christine also referred the contractor we ultimately selected, and we are very excited to move in to our “new” home
