Design Your Community: A Hands-On Architecture Workshop in Marshfield, MA

“Design Your Community” is an immersive architecture workshop that offers a behind-the-scenes look at an architect’s creative process. Participants explore diverse design methods—from cutting-edge digital tools to traditional hand drawing—while discovering that there’s no single “right” way to create. Guided by a philosophy of exploration and self-expression, each participant is encouraged to develop unique design ideas that foster a deeper connection to their community.

Led by architect and mentor Christine Monaghan, this engaging program emphasizes how design can serve people and strengthen the places we share. Participants will refine both verbal and visual communication skills while reimagining a public space in need. With a supportive, inclusive environment, this summer program beginning June 23 invites individuals of middle and high school ages to discover their passion for architecture, creativity, and community impact.

Designing for Levitate: Enhancing a Local Landmark

This year’s “Design Your Community” project centers on improving the indoor and outdoor spaces of Levitate, a beloved multi-use venue in Marshfield, MA. The program begins with a kickoff session at Levitate’s surf shop, where owner Dan Hassett will share insights into the company’s vision and design challenges. Participants will tour the facilities, conduct hands-on walkthroughs, and learn to use professional tools like a 3D scanner to document spaces and gather design data.

Work then continues at Levitate Studio, where participants collaborate to brainstorm and develop creative design solutions that align with Levitate’s business goals and community spirit. With real potential for their ideas to be implemented, participants will create high-quality presentations and portfolio-ready materials under expert guidance.

By learning from real-world challenges and focusing on meaningful community projects, “Design Your Community” empowers aspiring designers to create thoughtful architectural solutions that leave a lasting impact on both their portfolios and their neighborhoods.
